Is there a trick to refilling a round base feeder?

Yeah, it's just like the yellow one in the pic, but red.
Basically a twin of the waterer shown.

I was thinking of doing that.
But today when I unscrewed things and set the base down on a table, the next thing you know I had a little yellow chick walking around on the table

I was thinking I could just screw the jar back on so they don't have an easier way to crawl inside.

Maybe I need to add a second feeder.

But cutting off the top seems like a nice easy way to refill it.
I just let them sit inside and eat if they so choose. Yes there's always a risk of one somehow getting stuck, but that's true of anything around chicks.

But yes I like the suggestion of cutting open the top if you just want to dump food into it that way, that sounds feasible.

I refill mine (with a glass canning jar) inside the feed bag, so spills aren't lost or wasted. Then I flip it over, again inside the feed bag. Yes, most of the feed goes into the feeder base, leaving the jar about half full. No problem, use two jars. If there is not room for two jars in the brooder, no problem. Come back at noon when the first feeder is empty, remove it and replace it with the second, full feeder. May as well fill the first one and have it handy (inside the food bsg), you never know when you're going to need it! Buy feed before you run out!

I found a pretty neat solution to doing this, actually :D I fill up both the jar and the base, then place a small piece of cardboard on top of the jar mouth, to hold the feed in when I flip it over. Then, I flip it over, and with the cardboard still covering the opening, center the jar on top of the base. Then, slide the cardboard out, screw the jar to the base, and there you have it!

I’m not sure that made complete sense, so let me know if it doesn’t and I’ll try rewording it or making a picture :)
