Is there a way to 'unsuscribe' to a thread?

You explained it better than I did. Even this morning, the same tired threads keep moving to the head of the class with the little chick alerts -often daily, if not several times a day. It's those that I was wondering whether there was a way to "unsuscribe", i.e. indicate no longer interested, little chick can go off duty and no longer alert to new posts in that thread. Sometimes I hesitate to respond to a thread when it looks like it could be one that will go awry or get repetitive because I don't know a way to release from the 'new post alerts".
No biggie, just wondered whether there was a way out.
