These three little chicks seemed to all sprout combs overnight about a week ago. They are four weeks old. There is one who doesn't seem to have any wattles, but on two of them you can see little pink ones coming in. This is my first time with black australorps (or any chickens for that matter!) so I'm not sure about the differences in roos and pullets at about this age. I still have 6-8 pullets in my brooder if these guys are all roos, but I'm going to be a bit bummed. I really wanted a BA. Can't have any roos.

Chick One. In the second pic you'll see a bare spot on his neck. He was like this when I bought him at a week of age. His skin was bare, but it wasn't infected or bleeding or otherwise damaged. It was a little pink. I just watched it and it healed up just fine and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I'm just wondering if he will ever have feathers on his neck?

Chick Two. Or at least I think these are both of chick two. It's hard to tell them apart!
He was very angry about having his picture taken.

Ewwww.....

Maybe I should have said...er er er er eeeeerrrrrrr!!

I wouldnt worry about the lack of feathers on his neck, they should grow in with his new feathers.

I have 6 BA hens and it hard for me to tell sex at that age on any chick... Especially when I rely on tale postion as they get older and BA's all have little tails that are straight in the air.

Good luck.

sigh...that's what I thought. I'm going to hold on to them for a few more weeks just to be sure.

Anyone in the Twin Cities area want a cute BA roo?
