So my mom told me laying hens couldnt fly.....so I ordered somw RIR's and barred rock hens with two RIR roos. The problem is I wanted to let them roam my yard but i live in a neighborhood and I cant have them all over the place. I have a six foot privacy fence is that tall enough to keep them in of will I have to clip their wings... Also is there any breeds the are really good layers that cant fly?

They can still "fly" although fatter breeds have more of a problem only hopping/jumping just a few feet. If you want a bird that can't "fly" but do lay a good amount of eggs depending on how many you use, silkies are good. Although you will have to adjust your coop for them since they need low perches ;)

The six foot fence is about the limit for the heavier birds but leghorns and hamburgs can and do get up in the trees.

Silkies don't fly because of a mutation that makes their feathers fluffy. They are great pets, fairly small and good setters ---- which means they aren't such great layers.

Orpingtons and Australorps are pretty big, docile, good egg layers and tend to stay on the ground unless they are ready to roost for the night.

Silkies can't fly well. Some of the males especially if they have a few hard feathers in their wings can fly a little but not like over a 6ft fence or anything lol. I have some big fat orp girls who can fly about 5 ft high if they really want something (like food or to get away from a rooster etc.) They don't normally try and fly like my smaller birds.
