Is there ANY hope for a slipped tendon?

This is in a showgirl chick now 12 days old. She is darling, but had curled toes and spraddle leg.

In taping the spraddle leg, the leg that was backward slipped a tendon and I didnt realize thats a common thing, didnt understand what was happening and why her foot went paralyzed and got progressively more bent to the side.

Now her hock is terribly swollen and the tendon is all the way to the front. I have been working most of the days outside the house so havent had time to attend to her as much as I normally would have, or I would have read up sooner and known what to possibly do.

She has had the slipped tendom probably 5 days now? Is there ANY hope of fixing it at this point and how does one fix it with that stupid hock swollen so badly? I am crying my eyes out, I know I will most likely have to cull her but if any hope at all, I will give her a chance. I put her in a sling two nights ago hoping the hock swelling would go down but if anything its worse.

This was yesterday, I took her outside, if you look closely you can see how the leg bends outward from her body

The sling I made two nights ago when I finally read up and realized what was going on.

I dont know, Jill, that looks like there is infection in her hock, like Zane had. You could lance it and see what drains out, but that leg is really twisted around. Not sure you could fix it without extreme pain to her and not sure it can be fixed at all. Sorry I'm not more help!

I thought so too, Cyn. Sometimes its rough being so soft hearted. I am gearing myself to cull her, but she is snuggled in my shirt right now so content, that its killing me. I thought there looked like infection and am a loss as to how to go about getting it out.

If I had realized her tendon slipped, I probably could have fixed it easily that evening, or at least gave it the old college try. We have really stepped up working on the house and coop so have out there from 10 am to about 9 pm and I am ready to fall in bed exhausted, or would have been more on top of things. Now I feel horrid that I didnt do right by this baby and she is the only showgirl that hatched. I wanted one so bad, and it was my last hatch of the season.

Thanks for replying so quick, I hate this part of the chicken thing.

OK 3rd times a charm Im either not pushing right button or not sending right way so here goes. I also have a chick with slipped tendon that is 10 days old but foot is of good color and chick does not seem to be in pain unles I try to (carefully) manipulate it. Is it to late for my bird?

In this case I honestly suggest you call around to several avian vets (or send email > might have more luck with this as a telephone call makes it too easy for the receptionist to fop you off the all too well known "we dont treat chickens" . send those adorable pics!) Also call to bird rehabbers (be sure to explain these are PET (decorative breed) of poultry) and ask them for a reference to vet > I know several members of silkie clubs have found a kind ear with a zoo associated vet.
I suggest the vet as I do know there is a surgical intervention to cure this (not at all difficult if one is acquainted with the procedure) which is often necessary on ostriches and emus and such (they often have this problem as chicks) > the inflamation probably indicates some infection (probably staph) so you will need an antibiotic for that. Good lUck]
(P.S. quite a while ago there was a post in this forum from a member in California who found uch a vet and described the procedure and the low cost (the procedure was done without anaethesia) > find that post (use the search) and perhaps print it out or google for the info and post that in your email to the vets.

Thanks for the info I will try all the zoo one sounds good too they are all about animal preservation. by the way Im not very efficient at using puncuation sorry:

Good luck, parisplus on your baby. I sure hope you can find a vet that will help with it.

I made the decision to cull my baby this morning, I have been steeling myself for it. She not only had slipped tendon, she had the twisted fibia, and curled feet on BOTH legs, with spraddle in the beginning, so she didnt even have one leg that was good.

She woke this morning so hungry, and crying and frustrated, I just knew it was time. You fought the good fight.

RIP, little one, you sure had a special place in my heart.
