Is There Anybody Else Here With Aspberger's Syndrome?

Man, I'm glad I work where I do - they really have it on straight. Work hard, get paid well. Do over and above, get a bigger bonus. Do something very well, and you'll often get a card that thanks you for your efforts from the upper management, often with a voucher for the (excellent) cafeteria. Management and upper management where I'm at (IT), is VERY hands off and not touchy feely - you're assigned a variety of projects, and you work on what you feel like working on, as long as it gets done by the deadline. No stupid games, no "lets be a happy family", just a good atmosphere to work well, and get money. Perfect for Aspies.

Hope everything goes well, today. If nothing else, you could always print out this thread, and let her see the issues you're having with your manager. And I'm sure you won't sound like an idiot.

Had the meeting. It seemed to go well. She was actually familiar with Asperger's so I didn't have to try and explain what it is. Then we went into my supervisor's reaction to it or non-reaction. She was shocked at his unwillingness to try and work with me. I did tell her that I didn't think he was being intentionally uncooperative but that he just really didn't understand. She did say that while he could have his opinion he really couldn't make decisions about how the company dealt with my condition since it falls under the ADA.

I then asked about my requests that I had made. One being able to use my Ipod and the other to skip the morning paid break. She had the look of 'Are you kidding me?' when I told her his reasons for telling me no. Especially for the break. According to him I had to be there to monitor the conversations to make sure that people aren't offended by anything that is said. The other leads and a more senior supervisor who are normally at the same break don't have to be there if they choose not to be. That led to a more in depth conversation of some of his management techniques. The 'Are you kidding me?' look just kept appearing.

It ended up that she is sending me paperwork to fill out to request any reasonable accommodations that I may need. The two I've already mentioned are fine. And she had a meeting with my boss right after she talked to me. It had already been scheduled but I'm sure he was surprised by some of the things she said.

Have the forms to fill out. Not too complicated. Biggest issue is that my supervisor is supposed to sign them so i can send them to HR. But after talking to HR I was told that I don't have to have him sign them right now. Just fill them out and submit them. Once that is done the HR person will set up a meeting that will include her, my boss and me. That way everyone will be on the same page.

Good job. I especially liked her "Are you kidding me?" look.

Wow. Seems it has been a while since anyone has posted.
Well tomorrow is the big day. The HR person is due at our facility tomorrow and wants to talk to both my supervisor and me. So things are slowly moving forward. At least I hope it is forward and not backwards.

Good Luck Widget hope all goes smoothly for you.

On a personal note I went to school to get certified as a Clinical Aromatherapist. Part of my final study involved writing a paper. I wrote a paper on Aromatherapy and Aspergers Syndrome using my husband as a case study. I've been asked to submit the paper for possible publication. Im a happy camper !
