Hi everyone I am new here my name is lindsay and I am a brand new chicken owner, and one of my hens has a nasty eye injury. I assume she got it from fighting. It looks pretty bad, I cant tell how bad theres some white stuff in and around it. I didn't want to rub it off just in case its trying to heal. Is there anything I can put on it to help it heal. A friend of mine said to use bag balm but I wasn't sure if you can put it on or in the eye I was hoping someone would have some suggestions. I also was thinking about seperating her from the rest so they dont peck at it I havent seen them doing it but I dont want to chance it so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Lindsay!

We had a hen with an eye injury (we think) last year. We put her by herself and kept her quiet and dark for a week or two until it started looking better. When we tried to integrate her back in it never worked, they kept pecking her eye. We put her with a younger flock and same problem. We put her with our flock of Barnevelder chicks and she thrived! She now is living with them full time. She is an Araucana but *thinks* she is a Barnie. Her eye never fully healed, it stays closed and is sunken a little. She is our baby though!

Ok, to answer your question

we hekd warm compresses on the eye twice a day and put teramyacin (eye antibiotic we had on hand for cats. you can find it at a lot of TSC's, vets, feed stores, dr foster and smith, online etc) on it after the compresses. The warm cloths helped to relieve the pressure that had built up from all the puss and cleaned it out.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck.
