Is there different symptoms for hip/leg/toe injuries??

We found our 15 week old EE limping a few days ago. We have kept her isolated inside of the coop to promote resting. She is eating, drinking, and pooping fine. She does attempt to use the leg and can hop around when up. No signs of Bumblefoot. I do not see or feel a break anywhere. We have noticed that she is keeping her toes "curled" up most of the time and only spreads them out every now and again. I have put my fingers under her toes to see if she will grab them but she doesn't. I'm a little confused at the different symptoms that a toe, leg, or hip injury would cause. I have read numerous threads with the same information but no clear difference between the injuries. Can anyone clarify what to look for with a toe injury vs. leg injury vs. hip injury?? I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!!

One of our hens has the same thing we toke her to a vet Saturday and the vet said it was in the hip. She is exactly the same toes curled under hopping. We have anti inflamitries and painkillers for 5 days if she improves then we are fine if not it's xrays. Hope this helps you we have been giving her warm baths to help relax her muscles no improvement yet bit it's only day 2 of 5 of her meds

Can you post a video or photos of her?
Do you feel that the leg is paralyzed?
Was she vaccinated for Marek's?
It's possible that she could have Marek's, but it could also be a vitamin deficiency, so you can try giving her vitamins-especially B vitamins - make sure it has B2(riboflavin), sometimes deficiencies can mimic other illness/diseases.

Thank you for your reply. We have started the Aspirin and it seems to help a little. She is trying to use the leg when standing up, but she is still guarded and will lay down once she is tired of hopping around. She will spread her toes out when she is trying to use the leg and other times they are just kind of curled under her foot. We don't have a vet around us that will look at chickens so we are having to do our best. We may try the warm bath too if she will tolerate it.

I hope your hen has a speedy recovery! Would love to get an update on her soon!

It sounds exactly the same well the first 2 days we saw no improvement but today she is standing again on both feet still limping but it's a start. Definitely try the bath ours had never had one before and she seems to really enjoy them she has 2 more days of meds I will let you know how we do.

I don't think the leg is paralyzed. She does move it back and forth. She will attempt to spread her toes out at times and other times they stayed kind of curled under her foot. We got her from a local feed store around the beginning of March. I cannot confirm if she had the vaccine. I did look at all of your links (which I appreciate) and I don't think she fits the description of symptoms of Marek's. Someone else recommended the Vitamin B supplements. I may try that along with the Aspirin dosage and keeping her isolated from the other 2 hens. She is eating, drinking, and pooping just fine. She will stand up fine on the other leg and attempt to use the injured leg. Thanks so much for all of the information and links! This is definitely a learning process for me!

To update you our hen is back to normal using the leg and now not lame at all she only started picking up on Monday. She was vaccinated against mareks and your hen sounds exactly the same even down to stretching her toes out. So I would guess she has had a bump n effected her hip. We were given a dog medication called loxicom which is anti inflamitrie and pain killer. Dunno if that helps you but hers was in her hip.

This is GREAT to hear!! We went out this morning and she seems to be using the leg a little more each day. I have been using an anti-inflammatory twice a day. She is attempting to use the leg this morning but still hopping around and will lay down when she gets tired. But, it's improvement which is great! We will continue the course of rest, anti-inflammatory, and some extra love and hope that she heals properly. Thank you for updating me! So glad she is feeling better!

Oh fan I'm sure she will be fine I think it just takes awhile for the swelling to go down. We only got chickens in January and it's been such a huge learning curve but these forums are great for info. I'm sure she will get better buttons went on her meds Saturday n only really looked sound again today so it takes a while.
