Help! Chick with Knee & Toe Injury

After multiple calls to different vets AND 4 hours with phone problems today I may be able to take her to a vet tomorrow. IF not, it looks like the 7th is the earliest I can get her in.

Not many vets treat chickens.
Many people report it's hard to find a vet.

Hopefully the vet can see her soon. Keep us posted on what you find out.

WOW! I found out that the appointment alone was $150 and that was before x-rays or a splint. The vet estimated at least $500.00. I can't afford that.

Any suggestions?

Without knowing what is wrong, it's all just guessing. You can try splinting if you want, to see if it helps. Hard to say. If you splint you need to use padding to make sure nothing rubs and irritates, and you have to make sure it isn't too tight. Watch for swelling, which could make it too tight and do more damage or cut off circulation. Below I will attach a splinting manual, you may need to think out of the box to devise something that will work for her particular issue.

That's expensive!

I'd try to splint as Coach has suggested, the splinting manual is very good.

I had a hen with a leg fracture, but her joint was not as swollen. I could feel the break. It took about 6 weeks splinted/wrapped to heal, but I kept it wrapped to around 8 weeks when I felt the leg was "stable". She healed well and did fine for about a year or so, then started roosting in the rafters. After a couple of months flying down (heavy dual purpose hen!), she was back to limping and the area looked a bit swollen. I rewrapped for another 8 weeks. (Changing/checking wrappings frequently!). She healed o.k. but learned that roosting in the rafters was not for her, the remainder of her life, she chose a lower roosting spot, so I assume it may have pained her now and again even though she didn't limp or act in pain.
