Is there such a thing as a docile Roo?

I'd like to get a roo but I don't want a mean one. (I know... I know!) Is there a breed of hardy roo that generally is gentle & nice? I plan on getting a mix of Welsummer, EE, Delaware (if possible), Red & Black Stars. I would like a roo to go with my girls.

Anything?

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but really, from a hatchery/feedstore it's a gamble. You might get a really sweet one, you might not.

From my experience though, most breeds end out perfectly good in the male department. Especially Ameraucanas and Oriental Gamefowl. . . Big, sweet babies.

I see lots of ads on craigslist for free roosters. You'd probably have your pick of the litter. And yes there is such a thing as a docile roo, we had a white cochin rooster named Joshua when I was little. He was an awfully sweet and friendly guy. Our serama roo is very sweet too but that would be more of a joke than anything else.

I have a Bantam Roo (not sure what kind, pic below). He is the sweetest boy. He likes to fly up to my shoulder!!!

My one and only roo is a 1 year old Blue-laced Red Wyandotte - he is extremely docile as well - never challenges me and since I re-homed his brother in September I have not heard him crow! I do miss that tho

He is from a local breeder ........not a hatchery bird.

I have two very awesome roo's They wouldn't hurt a flea (Well maybe a flea) LOL They let me hold them and even follow me around. They have never chased my girls (Ages 5 & 3) They put up with alot because they do chase them. I have two others who would much rather peck your eyes out then look at you

Nuttyredhead....that is some type of japanese bantum (i believe) i have a black one just like it, Bruce is his name. he wasnt my favorite when i got my chicks at a week old so he isnt very friendly but i have 3 other free range roos Delmer, Earl and Frank lol delmer isnt as nice and frank is my newbie (both are cochins) but earl is a maran and sweet as can be!! he makes funny noises when you pet him but he never chases me and he is actually a good sport about letting our "cattle" dog herd him to the barn delmer and frank object to the fullest extent.

My folks have a laid-back and friendly roo -- he lets the girls boss him around and is clearly behind a few of them in the pecking order. He resembles a Delaware but no barring so

He comes from the chicken equivalent of a puppy mill proving that good lineage is not a necessity for kindness of spirit.

Honestly, I think it's a crap shoot. If you're up for it, you could get a shipment of assorted roos dirt cheap (or free if you order from Ideal and need packing peanuts for your size of order) and then pick your favorite when they're old enough to show their tendencies. The others could then be rehomed or sent to camp freezer.
