is there such a thing as a nice rooster

I totally agree, they sure think they are big stuff! None of my roosters, and I have a LOT, are mean to adults, but I have 2 OEGB roosters that hate my son with a passion....basically any person shorter than I am. But it is his own fault, he aggravates the stuffing out of them! He has only been 'got' a couple times, but I think he has finally learned to leave the roosters alone....at least the little ones

He has now started taunting one of my large fowl roosters, and this one was acting like he wanted to flog me last year. He was only maybe 5 or 6 months old then, so I'm sure he's not going to put up with it. Goofy kid still won't quit, he'll learn eventually. He already got the goose to hate him, luckily for him, the goose is a big chicken, all hiss and no bite.

Edit to add that most of my roosters, bantam or large breed, are old english games. Only 2 of the bantam OE are 'mean' to my son only.

I love my roos. Out of the many of roos I've had 3 of them were mean.. They were OEGBs, they never did try and flog me but they'd gang up on anyone else LOL

I have a LF leghorn Kernal that is my pride a joy. He's like a son to me. I've never had an aggressive bantam wyandotte. I currently have my bantam blue wyandotte Bubba.

Heres my boys:

I agree with most others! Bantam Cochins are some of the most easy-going birds I have handled. I had three roos and two hens for a while. They were handled from day one and I can honestly say that the boys were more friendly and loving than the girls ever were. For the record, it was mom, dad, and three kids.

At the same time, I had a Sebright cockerel. He was a little devil. Went to live with 18 girls all to himself.

My 3-year old Araucana rooster is very respectful of me. He has never attacked me and is very attentive of his 7 hens. Had silkies and cochin bantam roosters and all were attackers.

I've had zillions of Roosters, bantam and standards, and none that I have raised were ever mean or agressive to me or anyone else. I'm not kidding, I have never raised a mean roo...And no, I'm not sure why that is, but I do think it must have a bit to do with how I raise my birds, but i can't tell you exactly how I manage to get nothing but nice roos! I have only had one mean roo, I bought him from someone and as soon as he was released, he attacked. I think it has something to do with the way they are raised, and then genetics and hormones.

Is there such a thing as a nice rooster?

Yep, he's out in my coop, with Lil'Bit snuggled up next to him, probably half asleep. As long as you're not the water meter reader, he's nice.

Yeah of all my LF roosters I've known, only ONE was mean. Of all my bantam roosters I've known, most were pretty cocky.

I have an OEGB who thinks he's a puppy dog, he is the world's sweetest little thing. He's almost 2 years old and has definently earned his retirement around here. He's a sweet boy.

I also have a young Dutch bantam rooster who is walking a fine line around here lately. He's been trying to follow me around and stalk me....he gets one chance and then he's gone. I don't trust the little turd, but he hasn't tried anything YET. He's awesome looking, but I have a feeling he's going to start the hormonal antics soon.

My black copper marans rooster is a DOLL, an absolute gentle giant. I

him and would be devestated if anything happened to him. I trust him completley and he is wonderful with my 3 year old DD.

My silkie roo is like a little fluffy teddy bear. He's so quiet and sweet. Love him!

I've been through many, many roosters and have no patience for "mean" roos. If they want to act like a punk, they can leave.

How do you know if it's a rooster when it's little? We handle all our chicks so they'll be used to us. Not sure if I can even keep a rooster in this neighborhood so we are hoping they're all girls.
