I just saw a flock of 25 in my backyard, they were definitely guinea fowl. I approached them and they were not scared. or did someone raise them and release them??

I would guess they were released, catch them and have a new flock

Sounds like a lost flock to me. Guineas have been known to wander up to 3 miles from home, why they wander so far is unknown (other than the fact they aren't exactly the brainiest of birds)

And sometimes they get lost during their wandering, and so they just keep wandering

If they stick around your place I'd pen them up if you can and then post some FOUND GUINEAS flyers around your area... (or don't post any, if you want to keep them). If you do keep them, keep them penned in their new permanent home for at least 6 wks or they will wander again. Don't get too attached tho, because if someone comes looking for them and sees you have them they can reclaim the wayward flock thru animal control if they really want the birds back (at least that's how the animal control laws work in my area of Northern CA).

thanks so much guys for the info. they were so beautiful and it was really neat to see them in my yard.
