I bought some eggs online, and all went well with hatching, but I seem to have 3 different types of birds. it was supposed to be silver and gold laced Wyandotte bantams, but some of the gold seem to be a blue colour where they should be black and are also a lot darker where the gold should be. the pics don't really show it up too well but the second pic is of a very grey looking bird. Although some of them seem fine, the third pic is a better bird.
I have never had any of my own gold look like this.
Is this a blue laced or a very bad strain of gold?

blue

gold

Thanks...=]

I agree that you do appear to have three types of birds. The gold and silver laced look good. The one that you are unsure about does look like a blue-laced red - the base color of the feather is a darker color than the gold laced. It is more of a mahogany red than orange. The lacing around the outside looks to be a good blue color. There is one thing that is looking slightly odd to me. There appears to be some barring in the blue lacing. I don't recall seeing that in my BLRWs as they feathered out. You may want to try posting this in the "what breed or gender is this" forum to get a few more responses

thanks, i'll try there
i just checked, as there are more blueish ones and they all seem to have this barring

They do look smutty blue. I'd send a pic to the egg seller and ask what the explanation is.

I did and just got a message back saying this:
'Hi , gold laced , blue laced and buff laced all come from the same gene pool so even tho you they are pure gold laced they should give you 50% gold then 25% blue laced and 25% buff laced'

I have had gold laced of my own for a couple of years now and never found this to be true, unless you have gold birds with another colour bred in their history like a blue laced granny or something. It would just would just make the bird appear to be gold with blue genetics, not a pure gold laced. Am I right on this?

Hmmmm... My understanding is that the gold laced is distinct from the blue laced. One of the differences is the main color of the feather on the blue laced is a darker, almost mahogany red color while the main feather color for the gold laced is an orange. If they are pure gold laced you should get 100% gold laced. If you have blue laced x blue laced you will get 25% black, 50% Blue, 25% splash. Black laced x blue laced will give 50% black, 50% blue. I am not sure about the UK, but in the US the BLRWs with the white margins/lacing are referred to splash. Buff usually refers to a light brown colour. As I mentioned in my previous comment, there appears to be some kind of barring in the blue. I would not expect to see that even if it was a gold laced x blue laced.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've asked again and he still claims you get all 3 types from pure gold laced and isn't responding to any questions about the barring.
Also I said buff laced, I think you might call it splash?
(I never did understand why they call it buff laced as its more of a darker red not buff)
