Is this a broody?

This is my Buff Orpington pullet, Nugget. She has been going on and off the nesting box like this, and puffing up to the size of a bowling ball and growling at me when I try to chase her back in the run after free ranging. She never stays on for long so I know she isn’t REALLY broody, but is this what a broody would look like? I also found a pretty big faeces.

Takes a couple days to be full on sometimes... but yes, she is displaying symptoms that she will be glued to the box before very long.

If you don't need chicks and also because of her age I highly recommend blocking her away from her chosen nest. The sooner you break the behavior the better. You could plan for her to raise chicks for you next year because she WILL go broody again. I like to add pullets from the feed store so I don't have to deal with roosters.

Nugget is adorable. Super cute name, too!

She is definitely broody. I have a Buff Orphington at home right now doing the same thing. The eggs that she's sitting on are not fertile, so in a couple days I hope to get some day old chicks for her and trick her into thinking that her eggs hatched.

Ok good! Well, bad for right now but I just recently found out one of my polish chicks is a boy and I want to breed some funny mixes next spring! I was hoping for a broody so I don’t have to buy a new incubator. I have two Buff Orpingtons.

Also, quick question...Can roosters help a hen go broody more? I’m not sure if this was a myth or true.

She's 'pre broody'. Roosters have no impact on whether or not hens go broody.
