Coyote track or medium sized dog, Cat tracks and dog tracks share the same traits basically the only difference is that dogs can't retract there claws. http://www.bear-tracker.com/caninevsfeline.html This is a good and healthy site for learning about tracks.
Not exactly. A coyote makes a more distinct X than dogs do. Their is a difference is the spacing between the pads and a coyote will be a straighter X. A dog tends to be have a little roundness in the middle of the X. Plus dogs, even the same size as a coyote tend to have wider tracks. Also depending on the area, the fur and two front claws on the front of a coyotes foot will make two small marks in the snow. We run coyotes with hounds all winter in the snow. So we see dog and coyote tracks together. There is a distinct difference once you get used to looking at them. A coyote track doesn't look like a dog track. They are just different and as stated, it's hard to explain but they X more distinct in a coyote. Neither of the track posted in the first post make an X, again supporting what I posted.
While we are talking about it, here is a quick comparison. Now this doesn't mean that a dog track can't have a more distinct X and look more like a coyote or visa versa. In general the X doesn't line up on dog tracks.
These two the X does not line up.
These two expample show the X in a straight line.
As I said this isn't 100%, especially in different areas, but in general this is an easy way to tell a coyote from a dog.
