Walked into my chicken coop this morning and found an egg laying on top of what looks like egg whites and an unformed egg shell. What's also strange about this is that is was on the floor and not in a nesting box. Has anyone come across this??

Do you give them calcium or oyster shell? It seems they have a lack of calcium in their diet, not enough to form a hard shell. Try giving them some oyster shell free choice and it should help harden their shells up.

but the weird thing is that there was a hard egg on top of this mess and they free range outdoors. I feed them an organic complete layer mix that had shells in it. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to just get a bucket of oyster shells as well.

Looks like a shelless egg. Happens occasionally especially in new layers. Nothing to be concerned about. If it happens alot then more calcium may help.

We had the same problem, even though ours were fed the right feed and free-ranged. We bought oyster shell mix and mixed it in the food and also gave them yogurt with calcium supplements crushed in it for the one that was having problems in particular. Problem cleared right up.
