Is this a cockerel!?! (Pictures)

Yep, those RIR get their combs early. The boys' combs get really big and really red very early. Yours is still very much in the pullet realm. Don't fret yet!

Yep them Reds do get combs, even on the pullets. The cockerels are generally slow-feathering, especially in the tail feather region so I'd compare her tail with your other girls' tails and see how that looks.

The Barred Rock that is more white looking is probably a cockerel. They are pretty easy to color sex.

sorry to say i think roo i have 3 RIR, and none have a comb like that & mine are eight weeks

I have RIR's and have hatched out over 40 chicks this spring. I too have had hens who's comb grows really fast and had me guessing, but they turned out to be hens. I find the development of feathers more accurate. Hens feather out faster and get tail feathers sooner My family laughs at me

, but I like to use the magnet to sex young chicks, and it is almost always right. Tie a small magnet with a peice of sting about 10-12 inches long. Hold the magnet over the chicks back very still. It will start to move on its own, if it goes in a cirlce its a hen, back and forth in a straight line its a rooster.
Good luck, hope you have all hens. Leave us know!

Barred Rock females have dark pigment on the front of thier legs almost like someone rubbed ink on them. The patterning for BR Roos are opposite the females too. I would wait until they crow before knowing for sure!
