So my cockerel and rooster (son & father) have just had to be separated as the son has decided his father must go. I heard the cockerel making this noise this afternoon…is this his purr? I’ve not heard it before. Just want to check he’s not super upset. He does have some supervised flock time, but he goes for the roo any chance he gets, and he’s kind of rough with the ladies, so for the moment he’s sectioned off for most of the day. The high pitched noise in the background is the roo, I also don’t know what that means but he does it a lot 😂

Im certain I don't have the answer to your question but he sounds like he's growling. I know they can "growl". One of my hens does the same noise. But I've never heard my roo make that sound....but then again he sounds like he's wheezing.....but nope....he's just a weirdo. Lol

😂😂 yes, I recognize the unhappy hen sound, but I’m not sure whether this is the same thing. The other roo was far away so I don’t think it was him…but maybe there was some back and forth going on. So complicated!

My rooster and one of my hens make this sound occasionally. I don't know what it means but they're never upset or agitated so I just chalked it up to one of their more contented noises.
I thought of purr at first, but then it’s not a particularly nice dust bathing spot where he is, so I’m not sure why he’s content…their language is so complex!

No idea, but maybe he is just vocalizing that someone is near. I would separate him from the rooster and the hens, especially since he is rough. He may calm down later, but you will have to decide which rooster to keep.

is it best to have him in the run but separated, or would he do best completely away? I’m considering having him in the house as he’s very good with us (conversely his dad is a bit of a jerk with us but excellent with the girls 😂) but I would like everyone to be happy. The rooster is currently terrified of him, but his son still goes at him with no mercy - free ranging today the rooster was running away screaming with the cockerel hot on his heels and me behind yelling at the cockerel…who is called Pudding….you get the picture 😂
