My young barred rock has only been laying for about a week. Tonight she laid a soft shelled egg. She still had egg whites coming from her vent. She now is acting more normal (she was straining a lot) but now she has this rubber band looking thing hanging out of her vent. I thought maybe it was part of the soft shell but it seems to be attached. I'm not positive it's attached because I don't want to pull on it and injure her. Graphic pictures. Thank you these are my fist chicken. I can get a better picture if needed but I'm now losing daylight

So Is this a prolapsed vent? If yes, what should I do? Its now dark here and all hens are on the roost. I fear I might wake up to a dead chicken, If there is anything I can do tonight to help her please advise. There is a thin flesh colored thing hanging out of her vent. Thank you, I am so nervous for her.

I don't think that is a prolapse, looks more like remains of egg membrane.
Which could be 'normal' considering the softshelled egg laid earlier.

As long as she's on the roost already I'd leave her be for now,
but get out there early and take a look.
Maybe even go out later tonite and take a look see if it's pushed out with a poop,
hopefully she's facing the wall so will be easier to look with out disturbing her.

Did a butt check this morning and all is back to normal :celebrate:celebrate:celebrateI really think it was a remnant of a soft shell egg. Is it possible the egg broke inside her? If yes then that makes sense. I think it broke, then she passed the soft shell with a lot of the white then the yolk and a remnant of shell was hanging out of her vent. Weird that the yolk was not broken on the ground. Thanks for easing my mind last night:love
