I've got a 6-7 month old orpington and we were told it was female when we got it a few months ago but I'm not sure anymore...Is it a pullet? and if so should she be laying by now?

Thats disappointing, roosters can't be kept in my area :barnie
What about him tells you its a cockerel? I'm never very good at sexing chickens...
His feathering. Do you see how the feathers on his back are a different shape, with pointed tips? See how his neck feathers are reminiscent of a Fabio hair style? Those are male specific feathers.
In addition, his comb has probably been very red for a long while now. Pullets don't start to pink up in the comb till they are a few weeks from laying.

He has been occasionally crowing but it usually is a similar to the sounds my hens make, and I see what you mean about the pointed feathers now...all the signs are there and it defiantly makes a lot of sense I guess I was just in denial :p.
Thanks for your help now I have to go figure out what to do with "Stacey" (oops)
