Purebred is not just about the looks. The genes matter a lot too.

Purebred White Leghorns should not have that many black spots on them. So I don't think that bird is a White Leghorn, but it could easily be a mix of Leghorn and something else (the "something else" could be any of dozens of other breeds, so I'm not going to try to guess.)

Purebred is not just about the looks. The genes matter a lot too.

I agree that looking "right" is not proof that a bird is a purebred.
But looking "wrong" is pretty good evidence the bird is NOT purebred.

And since you keep asking about Australorps, I am linking one of my Blue Australorp albums. The lightest ones are not Splash, but a light blue. I still had that pair of girls when I sold this flock to a friend. They are some of the 1st pics in album. Chicken pics at the bottom or end. These were hatchery stock, came through our feed store, from Privett Hatchery. Privett was purchased by Hoover Hatchery in 2023.

I did not end up hatching any from my 2 flocks. If I had, some would have been Splash & Black. The 2nd flock was kept at our neighbor's place, with some of our other chickens. Ended up being issues, so they came back home & were later integrated into one flock w/ 2 roos.

Note the slate colored shanks & toes on the chicks.

I'm linking my 2nd album. This one has quite a few chick pics. Some chick pics are of the pair of Lavender Ameraucana.

The Lavender Ameraucana are in this album because I moved a pair over to Kyle's Place - next to the Australorps. The Lavender, in multiple breeds, have a "shredder" gene associated with it. You can see it in both the pullet & cockerel - even as younger chicks. Lavender, in the Ameraucana, is now called Self Blue & is one of their accepted varieties. In some breeds, Lavender is called Opal, Isabel or Isabella. My Lavs were from a local breeder who explained was having issues w/ breeding out shredder gene. I should have had each bird with a good, purebred Black Ameraucana. All resulting chicks would have been back in color, carrying one Lavender gene (recessive - need 2 to show Lavender coloring) & hopefully not carrying the shredder gene. I didn't get that far...

I see a flock of rather young looking mixed 'back yard' chickens, no pure breeds whatsoever.
