Is this a purebred Muskovy?

It does sound safer at the folks' house where Pete's at. Especially if she is catching heat for just being there, poor baby.

I can tell you that I've clipped & sanded my Daisy's nails numerous times & sometimes there's a little blood. Sometimes you can't help but clip the tip of the quick. She gives a little "woot!" & a mean mug for a second then she forgets about it, still comes to me & doesn't hate me. She does know getting her nails done is a regular thing after she gets her shower & it means she gets peas, dog kibbles & hugs!

They are easy to bribe out of holding a grudge, they are!

It'd be nice if she see's Pete as the tall, white & handsom guy he is & you had a happy Pete out of the deal

I'm going to grab her tomorrow and bring her up...keep them in different pens for the first day or so, let her settle in before I attempt her nails. It's only a few that are curled, a couple are REALLY short. Once I get her up there I will try and get a picture of her feet so you can see them, and a few more good ones of her. She is so pretty!

Here's a pic of her toenails

And here's a few more of her....she is such a love, makes me wonder if somebody had her as a pet and just dumped her.

One of her and my daughter

Also, are Muscovies like other ducks in the swimming department? She got in the pool and she pretty much sat on the bottom, and didn't float at all, and when she got out the water just ran out of her feathers.

She's going to be really beautiful when you get the dirt off of her.

In the top photo, I can see the quick of the nail. It is slightly pinkish and stops about halfway down the nail.

She's definitely a pure muscovy hen, she just looks a little frazzled. Muscovies are incredibly intelligent, and will take to people very easily. If you give her a pool of fresh water daily, she'll get herself cleaned up in no time. The nails you will have to take care of though. But if she is an outside bird, they shouldn't get out of control again once you clip them. She was more than likely raised as a pet, and she probably doesn't know how to swim. Give her a deep pool and watch her the first couple times she's in it and she'll figure it out.

The pool we have is decently deep. Pete swims in it. She got in and she literally sank...her feathers seem to hold more water then anything :( The water was up over her back

She really needs some TLC. she will fair much better even in the feather department after she starts getting a good balanced diet. at the barn was there any place for her to bathe? I have never seen nails curl like that on a duck, dogs yes and it's pitiful. Does it seem to make her walk strange. Give her a few days of getting use to her new surrounding and good fresh food and water maybe with some quality Poultry vitamins in it and then clip her nails. just do it a little at a time because the quick will receed as you clip. also I have read that flour works good as a blood stop too. Never tried it though. She is so pretty. reminds me of a couple of my girls.. Heres hoping her and Pete have a happy life with you.!!
