Hello,

I am realizing that I am not good at feather sexing my chickens at all and now I am unsure if this is a roo or a hen...she was hatched under my broody hen on 07/27/13. She is not crowing at all, however her back feathers are throwing me off.

Please help! Thank you very much.

This is her at about 2 weeks old with her mom...or I should say his mom. His head does look a little big like a rooster.

Yeah it's a cockerel. He was a cute lil fella and is now handsome. My cochin "pullet" was bigger and turned out to be a boy too.

You can sex this bird by color. The black breast and red head and back is a rooster color pattern, you'll never see a female bird this color. Plus the comb and saddle feathers.

Definitely a rooster. You will not see this type of red and black coloring (the name of the variety is Black Breasted Red) in a female bird.
