Does anybody think this chicken is a rooster? Here's a couple of pictures of the same.
Looks like a hen. Also looks to be about to lay. How old is it?
Yes, we are expecting it to lay any day now. I guess *SHE* is about 4 months. We were just wondering about the interesting whatever you call it on her head and underneath her head.
If you can't tell, we're really beginners at this. Thanks.
Comb and wattles.
Definitely a hen!
My son told me the name of this chicken is Comet. I think he is currently trying to figure out names for the other 7, all hens we pretty much believe.
I agree, you've got a lovely hen!
She's a red sex link hen. Sex link means the sex is linked to the color. In the case of red sex links, the hens are red and the roosters are silver. So, she's guaranteed to be female from the start.
Red sex link is like the generic name for this hybrid. Some trade or brand names are Red Star and Golden Comet--that may be where your son got the name.
Large, red comb and wattles are signs of sexual maturity. It can freak folks out when the hens sprout them so suddenly. It just means they're growing up and getting ready to lay.
