Is this a rooster?

Thank you for all this information; we got the hens from the hardware store Tractor Supplies I believe. It is amazing how nice they look, and they seem pretty docile and friendly creatures who like their habits.

Yesterday, I was outside with them, THOUGH, and something did freak me out about them. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask, but everyone here is so knowledgeable!

What does it mean suddenly, the hens all start running, flap their wings, make noise, and start flying in the air **together**? When it first happens to you, it freaks you out because you're not really sure what's going on or what they are doing. Then, just as suddenly, they land on the ground and go about like everything is normal.

Some sort of internal tribal chicken dance? Thanks everyone for all your help, by the way, everyone gave me some great info!

My son also wanted to tell everyone, he called the hen comet because of the white feathers around its neck that sort of look like the mist coming off a comet!

You're pretty much on with the tribal dance. Just like a group of kiddos or kittens or whatever, they'll just spazz out for a few minutes and then be just fine.
