Is this a Rooster?

Oh my. Rooster's are a trip the first time you own one. I TOTALLY get the feeling.

Some roosters mature slower than others. I had one mounting hens at only 2 months old. He was crowing around that age too. I also had a Light Sussex that was a late bloomer. He didn't crow until 6 months!

What you can expect is that when they start crowing, you get scared. Well you may not from seeing all kinds of videos on here of the noises chickens make. But it will probably alarm you to hear a noise like that coming from your flock! I don't really know how to describe it. It's crazy. It's like a 3 or 4 note, crazy sound that a dinosaur would make. But tbe practice and it sounds normal after a while.

The first time I saw a rooster mounting my hen I thought he was trying to kill her. It scared me so much. But it's normal.

Your hens will be MUCH more protected. Roosters would die to save their hens. One time, a hawk tried to get my chickens. My light sussex rooster bravely fought the hawk. The hawk left, and my flock was safe. My roo only had a few scratches. He rocked until he got sooo agressive and he had to ummm... "go to a different farm" as we told my sister.

Also, if you get too close to your hens, your rooster may get mad and start to attack, but not full on. He'll just warn you by shuffling towards you with his wing dropped. It's supposed to intimidate you. The best thing is to show him you're boss.

That's about all I can think of.
