This morning I noticed a poo that looked like coccidiosis. Little specks of red in it. I had just started treatment yesterday and in my neck of the woods everything is closed on Sunday. I'm googling treatments now but would love experienced feedback. I won't be able to pick up anything until everything opens tomorrow. Perhaps that's why this gal wasn't herself?

I should mention the only meds I have on hand are dyrumacin (sp?-- the antibiotic) and wayzine which I don't think works for coccidiosis. What should I be looking for tomorrow? The interwebs say an antibiotic is good for treating any secondary infections and that I should start that...so I did. Thoughts?

Get some Corid 9.6% liquid, Valbazen liquid wormer. Most feed stores carry both. I would also pick up some Sulfadimethoxine powder if they carry it just to keep on hand.

I found a feed store that's open in an hour, so I'll head out shortly. I've never dealt with coccidiosis and you know how the internet is, it spells DOOM for your entire flock. Just like a cold will wipe out your family...heh. I know it can be serious, but I'm reading things like, move the coop, move the run, disinfect the coop. It's been rainy here in Maryland, the run has been a muddy mess most of the last 3 weeks which I suppose is how this thing really takes hold.

Are all these things necessary?

Enteritis (The Greens) can show many of the same symptoms of Coccidiosis. Green diarrhea and sometimes crop bound birds are some of the symptoms. Happens alot in Winter and Spring. Drainage in the yard and a dry inside area is necessary. Injectables work much quicker and with LA-200 (Oxytetracycline), you can give it orally as well. I use 1cc shot in the breast muscle and 1cc down the throat for 3-5 days with something like enteritis.

I really do think it would be best to play it safe. If you are running Duramycin in the water. Just stop when you get the items from the feed store. Sulfadimethoxine is effective against Enteritis as well as Coccidiosis and even Cholera. I would start it at 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water for 3 days. Stop for two days and give vitamins/probiotics in the water for 3 days. Then do the Sulfa again for 2-3 days at most.

I was able to get the Corid but the Valbazen was out of my price range. (45 bucks for the bottle!). Gonna do a 5 day treatment of the corid, then starting day 3 give them probiotics (either in the water or yogurt or both).

I didn't see green in their poo, it was the lumpy red splotches I've seen in so many coccidiosis pictures, so hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks so much for all your help Michael. I will keep you updated.
