Hello, I am brand new to raising chickens. I purchased these girls from a small local pet shop. They did not know much about the birds (which should have been a red flag). They could not tell me their age either. I bought 5 and two died within 2 days at my house. No idea on the age although they were fully feathered at the time I acquired them. It has been three weeks now and they have grown quote a bit. I continue to feed chick starter. Back to Didi. From the moment I brought her home she was missing feathers around her neck. I didn't notice the lump until a few days later. These are my first chickens so I did not know if this was normal. I called the pet shop about it and they were not helpful. I mentioned that two of the five stopped eating and died. He offered to replace them as soon as he gets more. I am now worried about disease. Aside from the lump Didi is a happy bird. She is energetic and shows no I'll effects. I have no idea if these birds have been vaccinated for anything. The pet shop does not know either. Is this a contagious disease? The other two birds seem fine. Thank you in advance! I would hate to lose her, the kids and I would be devastated. She doesn't seem to be on pain. However, I would hate for the other birds to get sick. Thanks again!

No need to worry about the lump, that is her crop 😊 Basically where she is storing food until it moves further through her digestive tract. Just normal bird stuff there lol. The feathers are a bit more questionable though.. It could be from mites, lice, or possibly bullying from the other birds.

Thank you so much!! I did mention I'm new right? 😂. No bullying here. She's the biggest one. I'll have to look into it. Any idea on the breed since the pet store didn't know?

Since her skin looks nice, healthy, and smooth, I would assume she's a Naked Neck and the feathers are normal. Not 100% uniform in nakedness I've usually seen, but I know nothing of the breed.

I hadn't thought of that, I forgot about those! 😂 But she does look pretty dead on the Naked Neck breed!
