I just picked up these 'pure' White Rocks a few hours ago. I got 1 roo and 4 hens about 1 yr old so I was told. I was also told they were pure, but a couple have feathered legs...not sure what they are mixed with? After some searching on here (after posting this) I found out they have scaly leg mites? And he has a HUGE spur? I think thats what it is??? Never came across this before? Also one of the hens already broke loose when I was putting them in their tempoary coop. Now shes running around with my Orps and I can't catch her. I swear she runs...not flies..25 MPH. Should I be concerned about my Orps? I've tried to catch my Orps but they don't want to be cooped up yet, they just got out. The White Rocks are huge compared to my BO's and absolutely beautiful, wish I knew where the feathered leggs came from. Also, they are not so friendly..could be they are just scared in an unfamiliar place, but they scare me! How am I supposed to catch them to treat their legs? The hen that got loose will probably be eaten by something tonight, because for the life of me, I cannot catch her!!!

I don't think that spur is abnormally long. Just looks like it has never been cut before and definitely needs to be.
Best time to catch a chicken is to wait until they go to roost at night. My roo avoids me, but I have to treat his legs daily for a fungal infection; so I wait until they go to roost at night.

A year old roo shouldn't have that long of spur....I've roos older than that that aren't that long, plus Rocks don't have feathered feet....you didn't get what you paid for.

You can definately trim them off or twitch them off. It is long and it could be a roo that is probably older than two years old. I had a roo like that and took a tiny saw to cut his spurs off. And he did walk better after it was cut off.

Thanks! I didn't know you had to keep them cut. I'll have to get more info on how to do it so I don't hurt them. The one foot is fine, just a small 'nub' but this foot....well I got scared when I saw it. I've usually only had hens and recently started keeping some roos around. Thanks!

How in the heck do you trim that thing?? With dog toe nail clippers?? and does it have a quick that will bleed, like a toe nail?

You can use a guillitine type nail clippers and yes they can bleed if you do not find the quick, just cut a little at a time until you see light pink circle on the face of the cut. If it bleeds, just take flour and dab it on the cut. Rarely they ever bleed to death.

It has a lighter area so if you just cut there it won't bleed. Just cut a bit at a time to give you confidence. I would think a dog nail scissors for large breeds would work fine. The noise of a dreml might spook him. Again wait till he goes to roost. If you have someone to help, You could wrap him(head included) in a towel so he doesn't see what's going on. If your helper holds him close, he'd relax.

Boy, they are snow white.
