I bought a group of assorted chicks which were supposed to be Rhode Island Reds, Production Reds, and Red Sex Link. There is this rooster that does not look like any of the above and also he has no tail. Is he just a freak or could possibly be an Araucana?

Sorry I was in the process of uploading the photo. He does not have tuffs or beard, but definitely no tail.

Rumplessness is, in my opinion, becoming more common. I'm sure some of the birds in hatcheries are become a bit inbred so the trait is popping up more and more in breeds that it usually doesn't show up in.

Your bird is not an Araucana, it does not have a pea comb and lacks the tufts known for the Araucana breed.

Roosters are frequently slow featherers. I have a 9 month old who has yet to get all his tail feathers. He looked rumpless for months!

not a freak at all..we have more young roos like that than not in all breeds. He will get his tail..roos are just real slow to feather completely..he's cute

Thanks for all the input. All the other roos have their tails or at least one feather sticking up, bult he didn't have anything. I knew he sure didn't look Aruacana or at least the ones I have seen. He is kinda cute, maybe he'll escape the stew pot. LOL
