It is 7 weeks and 3 days and the woman I got it from said she believes it's a barred rock and astrolorp mixDepends. Is it actually pure and what age? The comb is way too big for a bird that size to be a pullet, IMO, but I'd like to know the age first.
It looks like a cockerel, but is too dark for most pure BR cockerels. However, if it's a mix, it can be a black sex link make or other barred cross. Those would have only one barring gene to make them appear pullet-dark.
I've raised hundreds of BRs, both hatchery and heritage stock, as well as made quite a few crosses.

What is a black sex link?Okay, then it's a cockerel, not a pullet, IMO. I've had lots of crosses. Once, I had several I thought were BR pullets (came from a friend's eggs she gave me). At 3 weeks, they had very pink combs and it became apparent they were all male. They were sired by her husband's Silver Phoenix rooster over BR hens, so they were black sex links. Their sister was solid black. It was an unauthorized breeding, LOL.
Black sex link is when you can tell their gender from when they are born I believe. There is some obvious trait like wing color that determines genderWhat does black
