My husband and I went a feed store the other day to get some new babies. We picked 3 chicks out of the group labeled production red, barred rock, and ameraucana pullets. After doing some research on barred rocks, many websites and people have stated that the cockerels tend to have more white on them and the pullets are solid black with just a small dot on the head. I think I might of picked a rooster out of the pullets lol...any ideas?

Well, it's not a BR chick at all. Either Australorp or Jersey Giant, most likely. No spot on the head, definitely not BR, unless there is one and I just can't see it in the pic. Way too much white in the wing for a BR, too.

Ok, I see it! Didn't look at all like a BR in the other pic, so huge! Looks a bit like a pullet to me right now going on color, but the size is pretty large for a girl. Seems to be lots of dark wash down the leg fronts, but is it really dark or just sketchy? Wow, never had one with that much white on the wings! If the head spot is really splotchy and irregular, that would be a male trait, especially if there is a band of "frosting" around the back of the head, which I can't really see in the pic.

Coloring is hard to see in a dark pic... is it really black-black or sort of grayish-black? Really dark would be a pullet.
