Hi Chicken People!
Back in July (25), I noticed a small cut on my Welsummer's foot (2 yo, very healthy, good layer). There wasn't any blood and it was small, it looked like she stepped on something. We treated with iodine and Neosporin and kept wrapped and it looked like it healed. However, a couple of weeks later the top of her foot started to swell and then a large hard-abscess-type thing came out of the top of her foot. So we treated with irrigating iodine and mupirocin (per a vet) for 20 days straight. We thought maybe she had stepped on something and her body just pushed it out. It looked like it healed. Then, it started swelling again, and pushed something out again (December 25), even though the top wound was closed. The vet seemed to think it was bumble and said to continue mupirocin. It looked pretty much healed, but now is starting to swell again. I'm wondering if the vet is going to recommend culling at the point. But the hen doesn't seem affected by this, for the most part. She's never stopped walking and moves like it doesn't bother her. I obviously have a vet involved, but I'm just curious what you guys think. I'm sure vet is right and it is bumble, but I've treated lots of bumble and never before seen anything like this. Thank you guys for your help!

Hi,

I would try, if you haven't already, soaking that foot several times a day in warm Epsom salt water.

PRID is a product that draws, and might work too.

I'd make sure she was on vitamin water every other day. We use Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench. That helps her fight any effects of the infection.

Has your vet mentioned an antibiotic?

We aren't vets here and can't override your vet's advice, but I'd never cull that chicken. I would keep trying as that's got to come out and heal. Since it's been so long, an antibiotic may help if you want to suggest it.
