Is this canker?

You can do some research on acified copper sulfate in the UK. Regular copper sulfate is copper sulfate pentahydrate, and to acidify it, citric acid is used. That is found in stores that sell canning products. I have never done this, so not knowledgeable on ratios. I would check some poultry stores in your area since this is more of a poultry thing.

Ok, that is such great news! Is the dosage the same? I will try and save him as I have read (don't know if correctly) that once treated, he can't infect anybody else. I have never had canker in my flock before and am worried about the rest of the flock now.
The dose will be the same by body weight and I think the average pigeon weighs about one pound (454 grams).

You should know that a well known avian pathologist at UC Davis told me that canker is rare in chickens and that in ten years he had seen just one case.

Bacteria infections and cancer can look exactly like canker, so keep that in mind.

Thank you for the dosage advice. I will treat Sylvester my rooster with the pigeon canker medicine and update with the results.

Thank you also for the warning that this may not be canker and could be cancer. He is old so it would be likely. I have not had any chickens with canker or mouth cancer before so have been lucky until now.

Is the smell from his mouth coming from the yellow mass there?

I don't remember a smell when my pigeon had canker. I smell makes me think it could be infection. Search the pigeon site for something called 4 in 1, that contains several meds, one of which might treat a bacterial infection.

I gave my rooster Fungitox which treats sour crop, canker, yeast and fungal infections. He really improved and the yellow mass went white and reduced a lot. But now the mass in his mouth has reappeared in the same spot and is yellow and his mouth still smells. I repeated the Fungitox but no improvement this time. He has been in isolation 2 weeks now.

I am confused and don't know what to do next. I looked up medpet 4 in 1 but I can't get that here, only Harpers 4 in 1 which treats canker, coccidiosis and internal and external parasites, not bacterial infections.

Is there anything else I can try? Do I look for a different antibiotic or call it a day? He is only eating his favourite foods now- sweetcorn and egg and has a lot of mucus in his mouth.

Hi Josie, how are you getting on with your rooster? I think one of my chickens may have the same problem and as I'm in the UK I also can't get any of the prescription meds that people mention on this site. I also don't know what to do for the best. How did things turn out for you and what did you do?

Welcome to BYC! Check online pigeon supply sites that will ship to the UK.

Hi Leucite, Thanks for asking! Well, Sylvester is still here but he still has this thing and is no better. I don’t know what to do. It’s hard as you say as we can’t get the meds mentioned on here.

I stopped with the fungitox as it didn’t help (cost £20!) and as that was supposed to treat canker and fungal I really thought it would work.

When I thought it was oral thrush, I found a thread on here that said they cured it by using vetmycin spray and swabbing with listerine. So tried that and it kept him ticking along but didn’t cure. Also tried gentian violet on a cotton bud round his mouth and down the throat but again nothing amazing happened. I’ve read people have put anti fungal cream down the chickens’s mouth but as I don’t know if it is thrush I’m wary of trying that. Every morning I clean out the yellow mass from inside his mouth and it’s back again the next day. It’s also now gone into his cheek so he has a big swelling under his eye. His mouth still smells and has mucus. He looks awful to look at.

He’s not too bad in himself and still eats. His favourite food is sweetcorn and he comes to the kitchen window asking for it and still eyes up his girls but I just feel he can’t go on much longer with this. It’s been 3 months!!

How did your chicken do? I’m sorry for not replying before but I thought my thread was dead! I’m now looking to see if I can get an antibiotic to treat bacterial infections in chickens as maybe that is what he has but I’m worried about this lump in his cheek as I really don’t want to open it but I can’t see it just disappearing.

I hope your chicken is ok.

See my comment on my thread.

If you are in the UK you can get metronidazole by using an online prescription service and stating you have bacterial vaginosis. I basically lied and they prescribed it for me. However it was £24 so might be cheaper just to go to the vet in the first place. I ground them up, split the dose into about 150mg and put into yogurt. I had to syringe into her beak for her as she couldn't pick up food.

hope that helps
Helen
