Is This Chick Frizzled?

I'd like to ask same question. I have 3 chicks about 3-4 weeks old. They are mixed breed... possibly some EE in there. The place where I got them has no frizzle birds and all are pure breds except EE. This chick's feathers are very odd. I was thinking frizzle, but not sure where that would have come from. Another thought is parasite? Is there a parasite that lives inside the blood supply of the feather shaft?

It doesn't look like a frizzle to me. The feathers should have a definite curl in them. I'm not sure what's going on with your chick. It could be a Silkie x. Does it have dark skin? 5 toes? Feathered legs?

damaged feathers can be caused by mites and lice - have you checked your birds well to see if they are present.

I appreciate the responses! It is a mixed breed but we know one parent is Swedish Black Hen (fibromelanistic like the Ayam Cemani) other parent is uncertain.., possibly Easter Egger so uncertain genetics there.

I have 3 babies that came together, hatched together from same source. Two have perfectly normal feathers. My flock has normal feathers. feathers. I here is no evidence of lice or mites. At least nothing obvious at this point beyond the feathers.

I don’t have silkies or frizzles to compare to, so was not sure. I remember reading about parasite that causes this appearance and lives within feather shaft so cannot contaminate other birds until it molts. I can’t find the name of it. I think Tylan was the cure. But thinking this chick too young to treat. Also, would like confirmation that medication is the right thing to do here.

Does anyone know?

Are you on Facebook? There is a really good group: Poultry Colours and Genetics. I would post there with the info you have and photos of the chick. Its a really knowledgeable group and they would be able to tell you if its a genetics (normal) issue or not.
