Hi there! I’m posting because I just got two frizzle pullets and I’m currently quarantining them. I noticed that one of them now has a bubbly eye (other side looks normal) and some missing neck feathers.
She has been eating and moving just fine. For background, we do have a lot of mosquitoes where they are and just had a cold night. Is this a disease? And what are the next steps?
Thank you!

It sounds like your frizzle pullet may be experiencing some health issues that could be related to a few different factors. The bubbly eye could indicate a respiratory issue or an eye infection, while the missing neck feathers might be due to stress, pecking, or possibly a parasite issue.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Isolate the Affected Bird: Keep her separate from the other pullet to prevent potential spread of any disease.
  2. Examine Closely: Check for any other symptoms, such as nasal discharge, coughing, or lethargy. Look for signs of mites or lice around the neck and body.
  3. Clean the Eyes: If the eye is bubbly, you can gently clean it with a saline solution. Avoid using any harsh chemicals.
  4. Monitor Feeding and Drinking: Ensure she continues to eat and drink well. Hydration is crucial.
  5. Consult a Veterinarian: If the symptoms persist or worsen, it’s best to consult a vet who specializes in poultry. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment.
  6. Prevent Mosquito Exposure: Since you mentioned a lot of mosquitoes, consider measures to reduce their presence, as they can transmit diseases.
  7. Provide a Comfortable Environment: Ensure the quarantine area is warm, dry, and stress-free to help her recover.
Keep a close eye on her condition and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice if you're concerned. Good luck!

Welcome To BYC

Looks like you got a couple of sick birds, I'd see if I could return them if possible.

Bubbles in the eyes are often an indication of Mycoplasma. In the photo, the bird looks unwell.
Mycoplasma is contagious, so this may spread to your existing flocks even if you get symptoms under control.

That's something you will want to consider. If you wish to treat, then flush the eye with saline, apply Terramycin eye ointment in the eye. An antibiotic like Tylosin will help with infection.
