Hi all,
This is my first hatch. This little guy is now day 30/31 days and internally pipped about 36 hours ago. After 30 hours I expected it to be dead after not progressing to external pip but he was cheeping and there was some tapping but no external pip. I made a small hole in the air cell and he seemed fine and was moving and chirping but seemed stuck and the hole didn’t progress over the course of the day (8 hours or so) so I made it a little bigger. Is he shrink wrapped? I saw some vessels so I’ve wrapped the egg in a wet towel and put it back in the incubator, he seems happy enough and looks to be breathing well. There wasn’t any bleeding. He seems like he’s trying to stretch the membrane off with his bill.
I’m unsure whether he’s stuck under a wing too?
I’m hoping he may be able to take care of the last bit when he’s ready?
Any advice really very welcome.
And thank you all, I have found the advice on this site so helpful in this journey.

I just a few hours ago had a similar thing with a quail.. was In shell after he started to zip about 40 hours.. can’t stand yet.. he’s kicking and chirping away though . leaving him alone in the incubator for as long as possible .. crossing fingers ..

How’s doing?

I’ve got one of the baby cameras on mine and it’s moving it’s bill around and will chirp back at me if I talk to it over the camera. I’m hoping in the morning (4:30am here) it will have made some progress or the vessels will have absorbed and I can help it a bit more.

I’m thinking that as it has vessels it still has yolk too. Maybe my temp on the incubator was reading higher than the actual temp?

Fingers crossed for both! It’s quite stressful isn’t it!? I didn’t think I’d be getting so attached to something not even fully born yet!

Ditto, we had lost one right after this one hatched .. minutes. He was 3 days old . We barely held it together to bury him.. we were both surprised on how attached we got . But yes fingers crosssed .. :/ if by morning he’s still on his back .. well. But here’s hoping !

It was malpositioned in the end (so now I know why it never externally pipped) it’s foot was over its head and it couldn’t move its head forward to really reach the shell. I had to slowly remove enough shell (several sittings with long rests in between for us both) til it was able to do the last bit. It seems to be doing well and is drying off in the incubator and finding its feet. I’m so glad I put that safety hole in and intervened now. I hope it’ll be ok. Hatched On day 31 in the end.
