Just an update as far as the cracking mystery...
I did put the cushy nest pads in the boxes, but a couple days later I found this:

Definitely not a drop! That looks intentional and the shell was not soft.

I could NOT allow this to continue so I put in some fake ceramic eggs so "whoever" could peck to their heart's content and maybe get discouraged.
That seemed to work!
I haven't had a single broken shell since

Moral of the story:
CUSHY NEST PADS & FAKE EGGS ARE AWESOME!!
I always used them before, but somehow assumed they weren't that necessary... now I know better.

Shell looks like it might be rather thin tho....and broke when stepped on?
