This is my new-ish English Wheaten Marans pullet, Nutella, and I was wondering if I would be able to enter her in a local show somewhere (when she's full grown, of course). I'm not exactly looking to win a blue ribbon; basically I'm just wondering if I could enter her in a small show without being laughed at :)

Thanks! Oh, and her legs in the picture look a little washed out. They're more a pinky/white than solid white. I also didn't get a picture of her wing, but is has some black feathers when stretched out if that matters.

She has a bloody toe, poor baby :(

Post your pic on the Wheaten Marans thread, I am sure you will get some feedback there. I am not an expert....but she is real pretty!!!

Well, right out of the box she is clean shanked, that's a DQ for the breed. Number 2, she is poorly colored for a Wheaten. That said, if it is just some fun and show experience you are looking for, take her to a small show. If you go to an APA show, she will be disqualified due to having clean legs. Learn the SOP (standard of perfection) for the breed and the different color varieties within the breed. You can look up Marans Chicken Club USA for more standards and info.

I got a copy of the stadard of perfection book at my local library. But yep, clean shanks is a DQ for marans. If you would like to show, even just for fun, I would go to a show and talk to someone there and see if they will sell you some birds. Good Luck!

The colour description for Wheaten Marans is different than the description for Wheaten in other breeds. I'm still working on understanding the Marans description so I'm no ready to comment on this bird except to say she can't be compared to other Wheaten varieties. Hardly matters with the clean shanks though.

Right- I understand that the clean shanks would be a DQ, but I was thinking about showing her as an English Standard maran which I've been told I could do. When I bought her I got to pick if I wanted a english standard or a french standard. Would it still be okay to enter her in a show that allows english standard marans?

Unfortunately the information above does not apply to English Standard of Perfection when it comes to Marans. People on this website mainly hail from the USA and tend to use the USA standard, but it's not applicable continentally. She should (and does) have clean legs.

Here is a very nice website full of folks who may be more familiar with your version of Marans: http://www.themaransclub.co.uk

She's a very pretty bird, I'd say you should show her

I assume you're in the US. If that's the case she will be disqualified in any APA sanctioned show. Show rules generally stipulate that birds will be judged according to the current American Standard. since the American Standard calls for feathered shanks she'd be disqualified. I assume the person who told you she could be shown as is was also the person who sold her to you.

No, it wasn't the person who sold her to me, I actually posted a seperate question on BYC. I could have picked a feathered legged one, but she was most definatally the sweetest. I'm so glad I picked her, showable or not :)
