It doesn't sound like these people actually know what they gave you. It is possible that there is some genetic defect which results in lethality of only the females, but it isn't likely. I would be suspicious because you stated that some of the chicks are not all yellow, with some black feathers here and there. It sounds to me like they are selling you some random mix and not something that will actually be feather sexable. If you are able to, you could wait until they are 3-4 months and you would be able to tell then. The only way to tell what you should be looking for is by knowing what the parents were, as Ridgerunner stated. Here's a good site on sex-linked chickens.
