I get this question a lot....and have even had a few old timers tell me I didn't know what I was talking about.
But....all hens will lay without a rooster

Not just the Barred Rock.

As for the old timers.......I have invited them over to watch

That reply usually doesn't go over well!

All breeds produce eggs without a rooster but if you want those eggs to turn into chicks then you need a rooster. There is no chicken on the planet that will lay an egg and it turn into a chick all by itself. It must be fertilized. You know I have people tell me all the time that chickens won't lay eggs without a rooster. Some of those conversations get quite heated mainly because they won't listen

Many of us get many eggs daily from many different chicken breeds without owning or having access to a rooster...lol...it's a fact. Seriously, you only need a rooster to fertilize eggs so that chicks will hatch. Eggs are just fine unfertilized.

I agree Alan. I can remember when I didn't even know how to hold a chicken or what they ate or anything. I hope my comment wasn't too harsh. It wasn't meant in a mean way.

Yeah Wheels...we've all learned a LOT from the site. There was a GREAT/HILARIOUS posting a few weeks ago where a lot of folks learned that roosters don't have a "thing" to mate with. There were folks on here who admitted that they'd raised chickens for years assuming that roosters' sexual anatomy was similar to dogs/cats. I remember wondering whether chickens "pooped" eggs...lol...never thinking about the digestive system vs. the reproductive system...lol.
