Hi
I posted an emergency post yesterday after finding my hen bleeding. Upon inspection of her it seems like this wound has been here for a while.
Can anyone tell me what’s going on. It’s a large hard dry/brown lump with little holes where feathers have been plucked. I’m wondering does she have mites? I checked her skin and no visible one but I’ve read a lot are skin burrowing/microscopic. She has an open wound around that area.
I have separated her and she’s so sad, I can’t let her back with the others until she’s healed because they were pecking right into her wound yesterday before I caught her. I clipped feathers around the area, saline washed and put betadine spray on it. I can’t find any blue Kote to buy either.
Is there anything else I can do, can I put more dust stuff on her while she has an open wound?
She’s about 9 months old, last on the pecking order, free ranges on 5 acres plus has layer feed (she’s not laying yet but all 3 other hens are and they are all same age) I’m in Australia.

No matter how it happened you must get some bag balm or Corona and put a big gob on that wound. Dont use blue kote on a deep open cut like that. The bag balm or Corona have healing properties and also are sticky and will keep the flies from geting at the hens flesh and laying eggs. The hen can not go back with the flock until she is healed and the new feathers have covered over the injury from being seen. Investigate how it happened. Was it something in your coop set up that is sharp and sticking out somewhere? Was it a preditor that got ahold of her and caused it? Was it a case of being picked on by her fellow flock members? If it is that, then either something is lacking in there diet or they are confined in to small of an area and in boredom have turned to canabilism. If so watch the remaining birds closley, they will single out another soon. I hope your hen recovers and you get to the bottom of the cause.

It’s not always about the size of the coop though , one of my rir has feathers missing on her butt!! She’s getting pecked at and has a large coop with few birds . I put triple antibiotic on it and leave her out, I’m scared if I remove her they’ll really peck at her

Thank you, I will get some to put on her. I’m in Australia so not sure if I can get the same products here I’ve never heard of that (then again I’ve never heard of so much stuff being a newbie lol)
They are only in their coop at night they free range all day, I watch them and they do bully her a little bit. There’s nothing in the coop that could have caused an injury. But being out all day she could have been attacked by a bird of prey. The other hens are all like bffs and she’s the loner. They are on a good layer feed, free range bugs and things offered fresh veg and fruit here and there and scratch as a treat here and there as well. What else do I need to be giving them?

It sounds like you are doing everything , you can use polysporin or the ointment you use on a cut ...

Sometimes it just happens , my girls have been together for 2 years , no changes they just pick on the one hen ...it’s kind of like high school

It sounds like you have a good set up and diet for your chickens.
I had a hen get grabbed by a red fox a few years ago and our australien shepherd Momo, chased the fox untill to escape him the fox had to drop the chicken my daughter and i searched the woods and found her. Her name was precious. She had a open gash across her back that was 2 inches long, and open gaping woond that was hard to look at. We took her to our vet, he looked at her and said "when this kind of thing happened back on the farm we put the potatoes on to boil" he also told us that chicken skin is thin and will not hold stitches. needless to say, we took her home an did what we could for her. I put her in one of our rabbit hutches, put a big gob of corona covering the wound every day. She was a sticky mess, as her body heat melted the salve and it ran down her side. But... lo and behold it worked. A month later after the woond was hidden by new feathers i put her back with the flock. 6 months later i examined the site of the injury and could not find it. I dont know what products you have there but like snow5164 says, any thick salve with antibactierial properties should work. Keep it covered with it. Good Luck! And let us know how this turns out as i will keep watching this post for updates.

Thank you, I just feel so bad for her. Yep it’s exactly like high school. Breaks my heart lol do you think putting a mirror in with her while she’s away from the other chickens might make her feel a little better?
