Back in early January I brought home three large hens and two bantam hens. I was told that four were pullets born late summer but the three big girls started laying right away. One of the banties started laying last week. We picked out the other bantam because she looked young based on her petite comb but once we caught her we saw that she was pretty old based on how long her toe nails were. It's a hobby farm so having a semi-retired hen was fine with us. Today I saw her crowing. It wasnt anything fabulous but it sounded just like a bantie rooster crow...is there any possibility that this is a hen? I have never seen her mount or attempt to mount any of the other ladies but she does seem pretty old...If she is a he, is there any chance an old banty fella could mount hens triple his size? Thank you in advance!! I can add a photo if you think that would help

Here He/She is...her name as per the kids next door is Fluttershy. She is a bit shy so this is as close as she lets me get. Thank you for showing me the video of the crowing hen...so wild!

Does a crowing hen mean no eggs from this lady? I'm thinking she may be retired anyways but just wondering.

Over the years I've had 2 older hens that crowed occasionally, and I did get eggs from them. Obviously not a lot, but there were some,

My sisters hen started crowing for a period last spring. She had lost her only friend to a freak accident and was alone in the coop for a few weeks. That is when she started crowing. The new chicks got old enough to be introduced and one of them was a rooster. After a couple of weeks with the teenager rooster around she stopped crowing and no longer does so even though he had to go (roosters are not allowed where she lives.) During this hole time her laying did not change. She is a sex links who lays 5-6 eggs per week.

She might enjoy a good crow now and then, but that is a pullet.

I don't think she is very young even though her face looks like a youngster. When we got her, some of her toenails were 2 inches long before we trimmed them. Poor thing, her feet were even a little wonky from them :( Im not sure how old that would make her though. It's good to know that we have a lady on our hands though!
