My year old hen chased my 11 week old pullet, and pecked her. (Nothing major, just looked like pecking order stuff to me). The pullet screamed, more out of a jump scare than pain, and my rooster heard it. He chased (I mean ran with a purpose) the hen out of the bushes and then mounted her. Was this just a coincidence? Or some kind of discipline?

I've seen this too!! My rooster will peck the hens and chase them if they get in his way or start fighting. It's very strange... 🤨
You know what else..my hens will lay and sing the egg song, and then another will join in and another and another…and it gets loud. My rooster will run into the coop screaming, and the hens get quiet. I imagine him in there “silence! I will have silence!” lol

The roosters are the main mediators of the flock; their job is to keep the hens in line. It surprised me when I learned about it too, I didn't know chickens had things like this

Isn’t it the coolest thing? I know a lot of ppl will say you don’t need a rooster, and maybe not but, my rooster really is help for me. I can garden or work with my broodys and know he’ll alert me (and everyone else) of a predator. Granted most of the time it’s a cardinal or squirrel. He stops hen squabbles, and if my cockerel get to affectionate with a hen, my rooster will come running and do a jump kick to the youngster. Maybe hens don’t need a rooster, but I sure do.
