So I have this hen, who likes to hog the "good" nesting box. She lays 6-7 times a week. She is a Buff Orpington. In the mornings and the mornings only she will go into the box and sit. But in the afternoon she will leave. For the first time, she has been in the box all morning and didn't even come outside at all. She doesn't always just sit on her own eggs, she will sit on our other hen's eggs too. Any thoughts if she is broody or not?

She might be... gotta see how she acts when you go to check her and when you remove her from the box. It usually takes a few days for them to become full on broody. They don't care who's eggs they hatch. If she puffs up and squeals at you then probably. When removed from the box and sat down they often stay right there sitting for a few moments before jumping up and hurrying back to the nest box. Usually takes about 3 days of broodyness for my actual broody hen to quit laying eggs.

Another thing is to make sure the behavior lines up with broody and not egg binding because sometimes staying in the box all day will be the first indicator to that as well.
Good luck! :fl

Catch her sitting on some eggs and put your hand near her. They usually go nuts when you’re to close to them. If she does go crazy when you do this. I suppose she is a broody hen.
