I'm with Oregon on this one- sometimes people don't want to hear the details but if you can promise (and follow through on it, of course) that their rooster(s) will be respected and treated humanely, that might be all you have to say. If they are worried about them being eaten, they will ask "are you going to eat them?" and that's the time to be honest and tell them so.

Yah, it's not right to say you want to give them a good home when you intend to eat them but I bet if you put an ad on CL that said 'I'll take all your excess roosters" and even stated that's what they were for you'd probably STILL get a whole lot of response.

If I have a specific roo I want to rehome and I don't want him to get eaten if possible, I'll say so. If I just post a 'free roosters, come get them' ad, I realize most of them will end up as food.

As long as you are being honest if someone asks, I don't think this is a problem at all. I know there was another thread about a similar situation. The OP of that thread was going around getting extra roos for just the purpose of eating them. He/she was clear about it in their ad (I believe) and still had many people contacting them for free roos. I think there is nothing wrong with this and I am sure there are plenty of people out there who feel the same as hennyannie, where they can't bring themselves to eat a bird that they have raised but have no objection to someone else eating them.

I have given away roosters on craigslist and I am sure some have been eaten. I just dont want to know and I let them know that in the ad. It saddens me some raising a chick then having to get rid of it but I have had over a dozen this past year and couldnt keep all of them and I just cant butcher them too much of a softy. I say if they dont ask dont tell.

I have two roos 5 weeks old, one is already crowing. One is going to a friend to eat the bugs in his yard (till a hawk gets him, I know they will eventually). The other I will probably process. If I was going to put an ad on CL offering him, the person who gets him is welcome to process him for food. Why waste good meat?

Put a bland ad in CL asking for a good full-bodied roo. Don't specify what you will do with him.

I would assume that if it's not mentioned, the seller would rather not know. (Using buyer/seller loosely.) As the buyer, I would not even think of bringing it up, if the seller hadn't. I would feel like I was asking something too personal. And I would make some gesture, perhaps just speak to the roo, to indicate that I would treat the animal humanely.

The thought of taking some little kids roo and bragging about how he will make a nice dinner is definitely not my style.
These will be the first birds I slaughter myself so I am going to feel guilty about it anyway, although I am not one to dwell on it or be squeamish when the time comes.

I am actually picking up a FREE really big chest freezer this weekend specifically for extra birds and DH's Italian Ice (apparently it is better in a deep freeze)

I am going to post a new CL ad and see how much attention it gets. As I said before Roos aren't really allowed on a lot the Cape and I KNOW there are a lot of people who buy straight runs from hatcheries and end up with a bunch of roos. There must be a lot floating around...

I will definitely give them a nice life for as long as it may be at my house. It won't be long but they will be happy and then they will be delicious!

I think it is some kind of bad karma to lie upfront to someone about what you are going to do with their bird!

I have read of a couple byc members who pick up free roosters. I said in one of my post if you hatch eggs or buy straight run have a plan for the extra roosters and know that most will end up as dinner. I would love to do this but I live in town so I would have to get them and do the deed the next day to stay under the radar. I am going to be hatching some eggs this year so I plan to use the extra roosters for dinner. I would think that most people know when someone ask for a free rooster that they will end up dinner they just don't want to think about it. I think most people would feel better giving them to someone who plans to use them to feed their family then use them in a bad way. Be honest in your add that they will be processed for food for your family. I would also watch because your ad might get flagged. If it does then just say you are looking for roosters then tell them in a private email what your plans are. Good luck.

That's why I always charge something for my roos on CL cause nobody is gonna pay 10 bucks and then eat it, it wouldn't be worth it to them....I can't eat my guys so I don't want anyone else eating them, I want them all to be pets (easier said than done I know ) esp since most of mine end up being roos
