Don't feel like a bad anything. It's a learning process and hands on is the best way to learn! (Best for humans, not best for chickens). We all seem to learn most from mistakes.

You are absolutely right! We've had up to 5 girls in ours in minus degree weather downstairs in the house! It's also been used as a 'time-out' area to cool down the bottom of a broody hen...and works quite well I might add! Lol don't know what we'd do without it!

I have one white Cochin that has made a career being broody! Lol so...she gets a time-out as soon as I see her start! Otherwise, no eggs for weeks! Lol. ... And when she goes broody, they all pick on her...so the quicker she 'cools her jets', the better!

I checked her for any little pests and didn't see anything but forgot to mention I eliminated the roosters from my group about 2 weeks ago. Is it possible they were favoring her for......you know...extra curriculars and that's why she's now starting to regrow feathers?

...and don't overlook dried mealworms! They love 'em and they're high in protein...one of my girls favorite snacks!

My oldest rent broody breed but my 6 month olds could be so I will keep this in mind. Thanks.

I don't know. My rooster is very gentle with my hens but I have heard of aggressive roosters that cause bald patches on the back and have bit wattle and combs on hens. Glad no bugs have been found!
