Yeah.Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of them having a run? To be outside?
Mine had problems with beak scraping. But they stopped after a while.

Checked on my 9 week old chicks this morning and everything was good. Let them out now to free range while I do some yard work, and noticed most of them have some blood around beak-comb area. Normal? (New chicken owner here) — attaching a picture of Queenie, she is the worst! Is this any cause of concern? Should I put a little poultry ointment on the open wound, or clean the blood off them gently? I’m closely watching them now to make sure no one is pecking one another’s beaks...
I would doubt it! Everything seemed fine this morning! We do have hardware mesh around the entire run, so maybe they’re reaching through that? This isn’t part of the normal “growing” stages??
Likely cutting it on wire sticking their beaks through. Might be trying to catch some bugs, etc.How do you stop them from doing that, if that’s what it is? we have stone gravel surrounding run, so no vegetation close! Also, should I clean their wounds? I have some poultry ointment — should I apply that?
I don’t think I explained it right, it would not take away the outside if you used a clear material. But I don’t think that the clothe is the issue. Probably just honing on something sharpDoesn’t that defeat the purpose of them having a run? To be outside?
Okay this is good to know! I just lightly cleaned area with soapy water, then put some blue hen healer on it. Hopefully they won’t keep doing it!Yeah.

Okay thank you! I just washed gently with a little soapy water, and applied a light layer of hen healer. Girls always getting into trouble! Thank you!Likely cutting it on wire sticking their beaks through. Might be trying to catch some bugs, etc.
Personally, I don't apply anything to something like this, just monitor for a couple of days. Should scab over pretty quick and heal fine unless another bird keeps picking at it.
Thank you! I just spent a half hour investigating coop and run — definitely not feeder or waterer, so must have been them trying to get to a bug or something on the outside of the hardware mesh.Mine get it. Almost every batch of chicks I've had got one or two with it. It happens and shouls be fine on it's own. Could be from pecking or the fencing.
Did they just eventually stop on their own?I have a pulley that had a wound like that. It was the fencing
So odd! Totally fine this morning! Did they just stop on their own? They must have seen a bug or something on the other side of the hardware mesh, although I couldn’t find any signs of it anywhere!Mine get it.
