Is this normal?

Another thought on the eye....when I take chickens to shows that last more than one day, I quite frequently see eyes like that, literally everywhere, almost every chicken in the show. Of course, I notice it most in my own birds and in the birds adjacent to their cages. I think it's a symptom of dry or irritated eyes. Chickens at shows are often too stressed to drink enough, and sometimes are too stressed by being around so many stranger birds to close their eyes and take a nap.

That said, it could also be from dust, pollen, or other things that irritate the eyes, or dehydration, perhaps from a long trip to the show. At shows, you usually see it pretty uniformly in both eyes. If it's just in one eye, it could be dust or something in the eye or a slight injury.

I am not really an expert but the eyes that appear sunken look like some chickens who have been suffering from conjunctivitis (pinkeye) which is a sign of mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) That is a chronic respiratory disease. It may start with bubbles or foam in one eye. Sometimes the eyelid will swell or there might be some pus in the sinus which causes facial swelling. Chickens may recover, and sometimes may get symptoms again during periods of stress. If she is not acting sick, I would just watch her. Here is some reading about MG:

So now a couple of my girls have come down with bubbles in the eye. I will be getting them some antibiotics now though I don’t know which ones exactly.
