Is this ok?

Is it mean not to give hens a place to go at night, just sleep in the pen? I think it's called an open air coop. They will be in the pen til they are big enough to go in with the rest of the flock.

For protection, I would at least put a dog house or something in there, with a roost or two fixed inside. They like to roost.

Even if the weather is warm during the night, the chickens will feel more protected with a smaller enclosure in which to stay the night. Make sure there is cross ventilation at the top of their temporary coop.

Yup I'm puttin a roost, and there is a roof so they won't get wet. But the only dog crate I have will hold all of them except 1 or 2, so the smaller ones will be kicked out. I have another medium dog crate but will they all want to be together? Or will it be ok cause some of them will prefer to roost in stead of going in the dog crate? Am I worrying to much?
